The Honest Take

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山, 5,596m) is the glacier-capped massif visible from Lijiang Old Town. Spectacular to look at. But the “hike” is a ¥100 entry fee + ¥140 cable car to a 4,506m viewing platform — a concrete terrace with a crowd and a gift shop. Not hiking. Not worth the money.

If you’re in Lijiang and want to see the mountain, save your cash. Find a rooftop café in the Old Town, order a coffee, and enjoy the view for free. On a clear morning, the snow-capped peak against blue sky is genuinely stunning — and it costs you nothing.

What You Actually Get

The scenic area is split into several sub-areas. The main draw is the Glacier Park at the top; the others are lower-altitude meadows.

The Cable Cars (索道)

Cable car Chinese name Goes to Price
Large cable car (大索道) 冰川公园索道 4,506m glacier viewing platform ¥140
Medium cable car (中索道) 牦牛坪索道 Yak Meadow (~3,800m) ¥65
Small cable car (小索道) 云杉坪索道 Spruce Meadow (~3,200m) ¥60

The large cable car is what most tourists take. It deposits you at 4,506m — a concrete platform with railings, tour groups, and a gift shop selling oxygen canisters. 15–30 minutes before the cable car queue forces you back down.

Free Areas (included in entry fee)

  • Blue Moon Valley (蓝月谷) — Turquoise pools at the base. Pleasant, but packed.
  • Ganhai Zi (甘海子) — Alpine meadow area. Flat, not much to see.
  • Swiss Garden (瑞士风情园) — A landscaped garden. Skip it.

What You Don’t Get

There is no trail. There is no hiking. You do not climb the mountain. The main summit, Shanzidou (扇子陡, 5,596m), is closed to all visitors and has only been climbed once — by an American expedition in 1987 (documented in the 1988 American Alpine Journal).

Costs

Item Price
Scenic area entry (门票) ¥100
Scenic area shuttle bus (环保车) ¥20
Large cable car — Glacier Park (大索道) ¥140
Medium cable car — Yak Meadow (中索道) ¥65
Small cable car — Spruce Meadow (小索道) ¥60
Oxygen canister (sold at platform) ¥50–100 (tourist markup)

Most tourists take the large cable car. That’s ¥100 + ¥20 + ¥140 = ¥260 minimum before oxygen or transport to the park entrance.

Peak season (July–August, Chinese holidays) lines for the large cable car can exceed 2 hours. Large cable car tickets often sell out by mid-morning in peak season — if you can’t get one, the medium cable car to Yak Meadow (¥65) is your next best option. Less crowded, still decent views.

If mobile payment fails or you don’t have a Chinese app, bring cash — the ticket office accepts cash.

If the Weather Is Bad

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain’s only value is the view from the top. If it’s overcast or raining, don’t go — you’ll pay ¥260+ to see fog. Instead:

  • Lijiang Old Town (丽江古城): Walk the canals, find a quiet café, explore the Naxi Quarter. Free.
  • Baisha Old Town (白沙古镇): A smaller, quieter old town 10 km north of Lijiang. Traditional Naxi embroidery workshops, far fewer tourists. Free entry.
  • Black Dragon Pool (黑龙潭): Even on a grey day, the park is pleasant. ¥50 entry, but the classic mountain reflection shot won’t happen without the mountain.

Who This Is For

  • Tourists who want a photo at 4,506m without any physical effort.
  • Families with elderly members or young children.
  • People who collect “highest point visited” experiences.

Who Should Skip This

  • Anyone expecting a hike or outdoor experience.
  • Budget travellers — ¥260+ for a cable car ride and a crowded platform is poor value.
  • Anyone visiting during Golden Week or peak summer — the crowds are miserable.

Better Alternatives Near Lijiang

If you want actual hiking in the Lijiang area:

Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡)

  • 2 days / 38 km / Hard — World-class canyon trek.
  • Same region, same logistics base. Far more rewarding.

Cangshan Mountains (苍山, Dali)

  • Day hikes — Jade Belt Road (玉带路) at 2,600m.
  • Cable car access if needed, but real trails exist above it.
  • 2 hours from Lijiang by train.

First Bend of the Yangtze + Stone Drum Town

  • Free viewpoints of the river bend.
  • No entry fee, no crowds.

Getting There

From Lijiang Old Town, the scenic area is about 30 km north.

  • By bus: Tourist buses depart from Lijiang’s Red Sun Square (红太阳广场). ~¥20 one way.
  • By taxi/Didi: ~¥100–150 one way. Negotiate return pickup.
  • Tour packages: Widely advertised in Lijiang for ¥300–500 all-inclusive. These bundle transport, entry, shuttle, and large cable car. Convenient but no cheaper than independent travel.

The View from Lijiang (Free)

On a clear day — especially in winter and early spring (November–March) — Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is visible from almost anywhere in Lijiang. Best viewing spots:

  • Lion Hill (狮子山) in the Old Town — rooftop terraces with panoramic views.
  • Black Dragon Pool (黑龙潭) — the classic postcard shot with the pagoda and mountain reflection.
  • Any rooftop café in the northern half of the Old Town.

This is the better experience. No crowds, no cable car queue, no ¥300 out of your pocket.

About this page. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is listed here because it appears in many “Lijiang hiking” guides, but it is not a hiking destination. The main peak (Shanzidou, 5,596m) is closed to visitors. The tourist area tops out at a 4,506m cable car station with a concrete viewing platform. For actual hiking in the region, see Tiger Leaping Gorge.

The 1987 American ascent of Shanzidou is documented in the 1988 American Alpine Journal. Cable car prices, entry fees, and shuttle bus rates were verified against the scenic area’s current published rates. Peak-season crowd estimates and large cable car sell-out patterns are based on traveller reports from the 2024–2025 seasons. We update this page when pricing or access conditions change — if you encounter different rates, changed schedules, or new access policies, flag them via the “Help us improve” section on the right and we’ll verify and update.
