The Honest Take
Shika Snow Mountain (石卡雪山, 4,500m) is a scenic area on the outskirts of Shangri-La’s Dukezong Old Town (独克宗古城). The main advantage? You can walk there from the Old Town in 15–20 minutes. No long bus rides, no complicated logistics.
But let’s be clear: this is a tourist attraction, not a hiking destination. You take a cable car up, see the views from a developed platform, and come back down. If you’re expecting trails, scrambles, or any real outdoor experience — you won’t find it here.
What You Actually Get
The Cable Car
Shika’s main peak reaches 4,449m. The draw is its 360° vantage point — it’s said to be the only summit where you can take in eight sacred peaks at once. On a clear day, looking around from the top you’ll see:
- East: Daocheng’s Three Sacred Snow Mountains (Xiannairi, Yangmaiyong, Xianuoduoji — 稻城三圣雪山)
- South: Haba Snow Mountain (哈巴雪山) and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山)
- West: Biluo Snow Mountain (碧罗雪山)
- North: Meili Snow Mountain (梅里雪山) and Baima Snow Mountain (白马雪山)
But this is entirely weather-dependent. If it’s cloudy or hazy, you’ll see nothing but mist. Check the forecast before going.
What You Don’t Get
There are no hiking trails. No summit routes. No backcountry access. The mountain is developed purely as a scenic area with cable car infrastructure.
Costs
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Scenic area entry (门票) | ~¥100 |
| Cable car — round trip (索道双程) | ¥188 |
| Total at the gate | ~¥288 |
Online discounts: Douyin (抖音) often has special-offer tickets. Depending on the season, you may find cable car + entry for as low as ¥100 total. Worth checking before you go.
If mobile payment fails or you don’t have a Chinese app, bring cash — the ticket office accepts cash.
If the Weather Is Bad
Shika’s entire value is the 360° mountain panorama. If it’s overcast or raining, don’t go — you’ll pay ¥288 to stare at mist. Instead:
- Dukezong Old Town (独克宗古城): Walk the old streets, climb to the giant prayer wheel (世界最大的转经筒), grab a coffee. Free, open all day.
- Songzanlin Monastery (松赞林寺): The “Little Potala Palace.” ~¥90 entry, 15 minutes by taxi from the Old Town. Stunning even in grey weather.
- Napahai Lake (纳帕海): If you have clear weather, bike around the lake instead. If it’s also cloudy there, skip it too.

About this page. Shika Snow Mountain is listed here because it’s often mentioned alongside Shangri-La’s outdoor activities, but it is not a hiking destination. It’s a cable car scenic area convenient for tourists staying in Dukezong Old Town. For actual hiking near Shangri-La, see Haba Snow Mountain or the Meili/Yubeng trek.
The 360° eight-peak panorama is a geographical fact — Shika’s summit (4,449m) sits at the centre of a ring of snow-capped ranges visible in all four directions on a clear day, confirmed by on-site photography. Ticket prices were verified against the scenic area’s current published rates and Douyin third-party listings. Weather advice is based on the mountain’s altitude: cloud base in the Diqing region frequently drops below 4,000m, making summit visibility unreliable in overcast conditions.
